The History Of Castanets

Castanets, also known as "Spanish castanets", are used in Spain, Italy and other southern European countries as well as Latin American national dance. In symphony, opera and dance music, castanets are usually limited to accompaniment with Southern European and Latin American style of music, song and dance. Sometimes, castanets can even be used for solo.

 

There are two castanets: one is used by dancers to accompany dancers, the other is symphony orchestra instruments, the two are different in appearance. Castanets also came from the East into Europe, and became the Spanish folk dance folk music instruments. The symphony orchestra is also primarily used in the music of the Spanish dance genre, such as the Polleiro dance.
